Be a Bag Lady: The perfect work bag and what to put in it

Clockwise from top left: bag, £95, Topshop; purse, £7.99, River Island; ruled notebook, £10, Moleskine; blotting papers, £2.99, Kleenex at Superdrug; mirror, £20, Paul & Joe at ASOS; lipstick in shade 22, £5.49, Kate Moss for Rimmel at Feelunique; pen, £1.75, Paperchase.

Bags are a thing of magic. Having a fat day? No worries! Buying a new bag involves no changing rooms, no awkward struggles with zips and buckles and no minor break downs when you realise you need the next size up. The only item that makes you feel good when you buy it in a larger size (psst! The bigger the bag, the smaller you look in comparison), going on the hunt for the next addition to your collection acts as a pair of straightening irons on the kinks in your self esteem.

One item that seemingly most of us is on a constant quest to discover is the ever elusive "go anywhere" bag. Professional enough for work without looking dowdy at the weekends, in a colour that matches everything in your wardrobe AND big enough to cram in all those essentials (plus a few optional extras), it is a chase that we avidly pursue, happy in the knowledge that the trophy will most certainly be worth it.

This gorgeous hold all from Topshop may, however, stop you in your tracks - standing, blinking into the light, surely this could be the one? Simply structured in black leather with a chic gold tri-lock fastening, this holdall is filled with enough room for you to cram all those knick-knacks in and has both handles and a cross body strap for ease of carry. A thing of sheer beauty, although the £95 price tag may come in higher than other items sold at the retailer, this Topshop piece has a luxe appeal that makes it appear much more expensive. Hurried swaps of equipment into different bags throughout the week will be a thing of the past, as this investment has a transient nature that suits every outfit, every time.

However, because of its sheer size, it may be easy to squeeze in everything you don't need whilst forgetting the few things you do. Make sure to leave the house in the morning with everything you need in your purse (I suggest this faux-snakeskin clasped wallet from River Island) to avoid an awkward encounter at the Starbucks counter when you realise your debit card is still sat in your Saturday night clutch bag at home (seriously, the amount of times this has happened to me is getting ridiculous now). For beauty touch ups throughout the day, make sure to include a pretty pocket mirror, blotting papers to remove any excess oil from your face without caking on extra makeup and a striking red lip for a boost of confidence in post-lunch meetings. Finally, it's always a good idea to carry a notebook and pen at all times in case inspiration hits whilst you're not at your desk - or for doodling on the commute home to keep you awake until you arrive at your stop. Pad out with your phone and any items deemed necessary for your role and transport yourself from Monday through to Friday inside this wonderful piece of arm candy.
