Dress Down Friday Fears: The Biker Jacket

Dress Down Friday is a weekly terror for some. "Casual" and "corporate" are two words that just don't tend to mix, so it seems pretty twisted to torture us weekly with a day where we must teeter the balance between on- and off-duty. Help is on hand, however: each Thursday, theworkwearedit will bring to your desktops a little nugget of inspiration to help you plan an outfit for the follow day.

Image on left from Stockholm Streetstyle. Clockwise from top left: leather look jacket, £55, River Island; knitted v-neck, £38, Topshop; split hem skirt, £22.99 (previously £29.99), Zara; sandals, £40, Office.

Is there a more fashionable subcontinent than Scandinavia? After recently visiting Denmark, I think not. This week's inspiration comes, again, from Stockholm Streetstyle, with an off-duty look from model Katya Riabinkina. Using a simple, parred down combination of grey jumper and black split skirt as a canvass, the statement element of this look is by far Katya's distressed leather biker jacket.

Eternally cool, if you haven't already got a black leather (or leather look) biker jacket floating around in your wardrobe, you need to invest - and fast. Designers and premium brands offer up gorgeous butter soft incarnations of the number, but styles like this can often set the buyer back several hundred pounds. If you haven't got that sort of cash spare, however, never fear - the high street offers up its own versions in both leather and faux leather and this River Island style is the perfect budget version (for those looking for even more of a bargain, check out eBay, where many more can be found for even less).

Make like Katya and wear yours with a knitted top - this gorgeous, slouchy piece from Topshop is simple enough to go with anything, but an interesting item in itself - and a side split pencil skirt for a smart casual look that channels your inner road hog.
