Dress Down Friday Fears: The Denim Jacket

Dress Down Friday is a weekly terror for some. "Casual" and "corporate" are two words that just don't tend to mix, so it seems pretty twisted to torture us weekly with a day where we must teeter the balance between on- and off-duty. Help is on hand, however: each Thursday, theworkwearedit will bring to your desktops a little nugget of inspiration to help you plan an outfit for the follow day.

Inspiration from Clockwise from top left: shorts, £11.50, Forever 21; denim jacket, £15 (previously £29.99), H&M; t-shirt, £12, River Island; sandals, £45, Topshop; bow necklace, £4, Miss Selfridge; leather backpack, £44 (previously £55), ASOS.

Considering the sweltering heats that Britain has been unsuccessfully battling for the past few weeks (I mean, honestly, do you ever hear of any other country's train tracks warping?), temperatures have dropped slightly these past couple of days and the air is becoming more and more susceptible to a slight chilly breeze. Stop yourself from being caught off guard with cold arms and take your reliable denim jacket to work. Don't own one already? Then it's time to invest. Just like your trusty biker jacket, this little number can be thrown over any outfit to block out the chill and add a heart dose of cool all at the same time. Every women's retailer, from cheap-as-chip discount stores through to high end premium brands, will stock their own version of this wardrobe wonder but chosen here today is the barganious H&M number, knocked down to a very affordable £15 in their summer sale.

Take inspiration from Company magazine's Features Writer Gem's look on their Office Syle Blog (how nice it must be to have casual chic as your dress code every day!) with her cute and feminine styling of the classic. Pair a set of polka dot shorts (the high waist on these Forever 21 pair should help to flatter hips of all sizes, from gorgeously snakelike to beautifully curvy) with this kimono sleeved black t-shirt from River Island as the base of your look. Stay true to Gem's styling with minimal accessories - mid-heel tan sandals will air your tootsies and keep you standing tall without making your feet ache, whilst this leather satchel from ASOS (another sale season gem) adds a touch of tomboy cool. Finally, lightly garnish the finished recipe with this itsy-bitzy bow necklace from ultra-girly brand Miss Selfridge to brighten up the simple black top it settles across. Bon appetit, Dress Down Friday!
